What is a backflow preventer, what does it do & why do I need to have it tested?

A backflow preventer is an assembly that installed on any water line that can be a cross connection.  These are typically installed on irrigation systems, domestic water lines, and any other connections to the public drinking water.  A backflow preventer prevents water from re-entering the public drinking water.

Water system lines break everyday and when this happens it can actually create a vacuum and pull water, chemicals, and other non drinkable substances back in to the water supply.  The backflow preventer prevents this from happening.  So you are not only protecting yourself but your neighbors as well, and vise versa.
